Summary: The Toro 20017 is poorly designed 2006-08-21
Comment: My old lawn mower finally wore out so I bought one of these. Here is my list of deficiencies.

1. The wheels each have to be adjusted individually. Since I change the height the mower for a differnt part of my lawn, this is a pain. My old mower has one-lever adjustment.

2. The side discharge sticks out so you can't get close to things on that side. My old mower had the side discharge attach at the rear allowing me to get close to things on both sides of the mower.

3. The deck extends out several inches in front of the blade which prevents cutting very close to things. The wheels stick out even futher which makes it worse. Not a problem with my old mower. I guess they wanted a nice big surface to put the Toro logo.

4. The handle acts a speed controller. The harder you push, the faster it goes. Unfortunately, it will occasionally pop wheelies. A squeezable handle would have provided better control.

5. The bag doesn't seem to hold much and when you have to remove it to empty it, a LOT of grass falls out of it. My old mower never had that problem.

On the bright side, the engine runs good so far and it goes fast which I like. I like the fact that the forward drive is variable speed.

Summary: This lawn mower is great! Recommended by Jay 2006-05-02
Comment: So I've been dealing with an inadequate lawn mower over the past couple of years. First of all, it was a push mower, not that I mind a push mower. Secondly, the bagging system was severly flawed. The lawnmower constantly got cloged full of grasss in the bagging chute and I would have turn it off, tip it, and mannually de-clog it.

Well I have to say that after running this lawn mower and getting used to the Personal Pace, it was great. It mowed great, it has 4-way independent wheel hieght adjustments, the different modes, (bagging, mulching, and side discharge) are easy to handle. Cleanup is a sinch. The Toro lawn mower starts on the first pull.

Two things I found suprisingly easy, and a delight to operate were:

#1 The Personal Pace self propell mechanism. This feature is so cool, the tension on the push bar was just right as I sped-up and slowed-down my walking pace, it mached my speed perfectly. Good for Toro, they nailed this just right.

#2 The bagging system was a sinch to empty. It has a large opening where it enters and emptys. My previous bagging mower had me shaking and plunging the bag up-and-down to get it empty and it usually took me a little while to get it empty. The Toro was very simple to empty. Just one plunge and it is empty.

After owning and operating this Toro 20017 mower, there have been only 2 tiny, nit picky, things that I noticed that bothered me. And in a fair review, if not for these tiny little things, my rating would have been a 5. That's not to say I don't love this mower. Its the best I've ever owned.

#1 The pull chord must be Spring assisted or something because it takes a moderatly hard initial tug to start. At least a noticable difference from my old mower. However, the good thing is that I've never had to pull more then once to start the Toro mower.

#2 The Bagging system has a flange that connects to a crossbar via 2 slots in the flange that hook over that crossbar. It's kind of tought to align the both of them easily. It takes a little bit of fussing to get the bag to set right on the mower. Never more then 20 seconds, but it is a little cumbersome.

Overall, I recommend this mower to anyone who wants a self-proppelled mower of good quality for both small and medium yards. A large yard might require a lawn tractor, unless you are a glutton for pain.

In closing, I would say that the consumer reports were right to rate this mower as high as they did (well they rated the mower with the electric start option, but that was a little more then I was willing to pay, so pull start it is for me).

Summary: Very Good Product 2004-12-23
Comment: I did not buy this model Toro mower from Amazon. However, I bought it from another site that is "like" Amazon. This mower is great! I was skeptical about buying it from an online auction. However, it turns out that the only thing I needed was a $15.00 blade., $5.00 air filter and it was ready to roll... It works very nicely! It is a far cry different than the older model Toro self-propelled units by far!... It's the Mercedes Benz version compared to the older versions... Most importantly, it's very easy to maintain... We love it!

Summary: Great Mower 2004-06-21
Comment: I did not order this mower from Amazon, bought it locally, but I wanted to review it for others that might be interested. I was most worried about the personal pace system, and it performs BETTER than even I could have hoped. The more pressure on the handle, the faster the mower goes. My old self propelled mower went very slowly...the personal pace system goes as fast as you want it to go. Very nimble. Cut very well. Started on the first pull. I'm glad I chose this over single or 3 speed Honda models I was comparing it to.
