Summary: Good but not great 2008-06-21
Comment: Just an addendum to what most others have been saying:
I've been using this mower at home and in a small (10-12 yards) lawn care business for a little over a year. It has great power but does stall easily in tall or wet grass if in mulch mode. When I have to mow deep grass I install the side chute.
The bagging system is a joke. It pops loose easily. The last time I tried to use it I ended up bent over holding it in place while I finished a customers front yard.
The handle is low and has no adjustment. It really doesn't bother me but I've had 2 others use the mower and complained that it hurt their back.
I've never had a problem starting the mower. If I prime it correctly it usually starts on the first pull.
Now for the maintenance issues (some of which may be brought on by a heavier workload than this mower was intended for...
1) the transmission is a lightweight. Mine went out after about 3 months of use. A new one finished the season last summer but it just went out and I'm installing another one today (June 21, 2008). At a cost of $50 it's not very cost-effective.
2) The side-chute/cover is easily broken if you get it against brick or concrete. Not expensive but not that easy to remove & replace.
3) The electronic ignition went out after less than a year - $40 but easy to replace.
All-in-all I'm happy with this mower. It mows well, pulls hard when the transmission is working and is fine for weekly use.

Summary: Some good, some bad... 2008-04-07
Comment: I bought this because my old Craftsman was getting rickety, the Toro's high rear wheel looked cool, and CR rated it highly. This is a mixed review.
The negatives:
- Front wheel self-propulsion is terrible. It doesn't grip as well and it is very difficult to achieve a nice straight line. Now I understand why people say rear-wheel is better.
- The height adjustment levers feel a little flimsy and there is one per wheel, which is inconvenient.
- The handle design is poor. First, it does not attach securely to the mower deck - you can wiggle it up and down by as much as a few inches. Second, the handle is slightly shorter and more upright than my previous mower, which puts you closer to the cutting deck and makes the mower harder to push and manuever. Third, the hand grip is a narrow piece of metal and is not comfortable to hold. (Some pre-formed pipe insulation can fix this).
I didn't realize how much I took for granted the features of my older, higher-end Craftsman (it is superior in all the categories above).
The positives:
- As of first use, the engine works great. Fairly quiet and required only one recoil to start.
- The high rear wheel does assist with turning.
- Mulching and bagging are both great. When bagging, this thing works like a vacuum cleaner on my lawn. The bag is very easy to attach and remove.
- The quick-wash hose attachment is a nice feature.
- The 22" cutting deck is better than 21" - saves me about 1 pass on my lawn!

Summary: Toro Down 2007-09-29
Comment: I like the mower despite it not cutting through deep thick grass well. The problem occurred when I hit a bolt on my basketball pole. The mower just stopped! The shaft is now loose and ALL the oil proceeded to pour out. So, I blame myself for hitting the bolt but I'd say my 2 year old mower is toast. I would prefer that it would have held up a bit better after hitting an object like this.

Summary: A Very Regrettable Purchase 2007-05-25
Comment: GTS = Guaranteed to Start in One Pull; this has NEVER been the case, not even from day #1. How can they put that on their mower's name!?
It also stalls worse than any mower I've ever purchased or borrowed, and I've borrowed some rickety mowers. I wanted to cry when I first used it, and frequenly since. I tried to return it immediately to the dealer.
The authorized dealer said it just needed a tune-up, and did a lot of mumbling about the grass might not have been completely dry, and the blade height might not have been a good ratio for the wetness, and moss, muble, mumble, and just working hard might have knocked it out of calibration, mumble, mumble. TUNE UP AFTER 15 minutes of a use!!!??? So I paid the $50 for the tune-up to my brand new $400 mower, and it hasn't gotten any better! It clogs constantly.
Plus the front wheel drive is far weaker than any other drive mower I've used. I can hardly tell if it's working most of the time.
The mulcher plug is TOTALLY not an option because it clogs up no matter how dry the yard is! So you better love bagging!
And you better be about 4'2" to 4'9" tall to use this mower too because the push handle is only 34" from the ground, so it hurts everyone's back and I can't even pay a neighbor kid enough to mow with that short of handle!! Industry standard is 38" and, trust me, the 4" difference causes ANYONE to have to mow hunched over like a question mark; my question is why are people allowed to stall, lie, act surprised, lie some more, make excuses, and give you the run-around until the 1-year warranty is up, when you are paying them top-dollar for a product!?
I hear they are letting their push-mower industry go down the drain, but they should not rob innocent consumers while they go down, they should just pull out of the push-mower lines altogether!
Toro's Customer Service in Minnesota is absolutely worthless too!!!!

Summary: Toro Recycler 6.5 B&S 2005-03-27
Comment: edit: After less than a full season with this mower, I have radically changed my mind. I was much too kind to this unit in my original review below. Unless you have a completely tame (re: complete flat and weed free) 1/8 acre yard and ONLY mow when it is COMPLETELY dry, don't buy this thing.
My parents swore by Toro for years, but that was then.... It seems that Toro has changed since when I was a boy and not for the better. As I state below, their customer service was excellent when I had a problem out of the box, and it may still be that way, but my five year old, $150.00 Murray while not as fancy as the Toro (not as many bells and whistles) works better and with fewer problems.
By "better" I should explain that I mean that we can mow our whole acre and half and not have to clear out the undercarriage or the chute. By "better" I mean that while I have had problems with the wheel drive system on both machines, but the Murray took four years to develop them and need replacement parts, and they are cheap and easy to get and replace.
With less than a years mowing with this Toro the transmission that drives the front wheels is completely shot. I am now waiting for the repair shop to call and tell me if Toro will cover it under the warranty. Who knows how long they may have to wait to get a new one. Toro should, and probably will cover the repair but who needs this kind of problem with a virtually new machine.
The other thing I have learned not to be too crazy about is the air filter and it's location. These little paper things (about twice the size of my big thumb) are $6.00 a piece at the "Big Orange" and we go through them like water. I do have a compressor at the house and I do blow the element out frequently, but this thing sucks in everything because of it's location and it's size. I would like to see a bigger element located out of harms way... up if possible and with a washable foam element.
$300.00 plus is just too much money for this kind of aggravation.
Original text: These are still available at the Home Depot (Big Orange) where we bought ours. We've had ours for less than a full season now and our "yard" is rather difficult, but my impressions are that it is generally a good mower though not a great one.
First it is powerful enough to handle nearly everything... except a clogged chute which it does frequently in our yard.
I don't know about the "guaranteed to start" system. It doesn't seem to start any easier or harder than anything else. I believe this advertising "spin" is to make the buyer feel more comfortable with the purchase. However, the engine is a good one overall.
We have found the mulching system to be totally unusable as it only makes the clogging problem worse.
If you switch back and forth between the rear bag and the side-chute as we do you should know that the grass plug that is to be removed when using the bag gets stuck as the underbody collects clippings.
All in all, it is easy to work on with standard tools and, in our case, the high wheels are a blessing for better maneuvering on uneven surfaces.
Our bagger had a defective frame (a weld broke during it's maiden voyage), but Toro supplied one quickly and at no cost/no questions.
For the average homeowner with the average yard, this machine will satisfy and then some... maybe.
I hope this helps you and good luck with your own dreams.
