After doing a significant amount of research for an American-made cutter, I settled on this Swisher.
The problem started right out of the box: the arm which supports the mowing deck would not stay locked in, dropping the mowing deck to the ground. I called Swisher to find out they only work M-F. I work longer hours than they are open, so I have to take a day off to call. When I did, I called at 1050am to find out their "engineering people" go to lunch around 11am on Fridays and "may not come back". I send them pictures of what I perceive to be the problem: no response.
Finally, we put it on a trailer and drive it back to where we bought it. They suggested taking it to a Swisher-approved Servicing Dealer first. It's either that or wait weeks to get a new mower in. I'm on my 4th season with this Swisher mower. It's the first new mower I've ever had, and it's been a little disappointing. I really like almost everything about the machine--it's simple, there's no plastic bodywork, everything seems well thought-out. Here's the problem: The deck just doesn't cut very well. If you live in town, and mow every few days, it's probably fine. I live on a farm, have a couple of acres, and we mow when we have to. If you're cutting more than an inch of grass off, it leaves a lot still standing. Not just in big weeds, either--just normal grass won't cut well. I tried quite a few things. It comes with mulching blades that don't have much lift; I couldn't get regular blades easily, so I welded on 1" tall lifts thinking that might stand the grass up. That was very little help. I checked the engine rpm and it's fine. Measured the pulleys and calculated the blade tip speed, and it's right at the maximum (can't remember the number offhand). After...Read more
